Gettysburg

What it is
Gettysburg sits roughly an hour from Lancaster City (needs verification on exact drive time) and is the site of the pivotal 1863 Civil War battle. The battlefield and its monuments are preserved as Gettysburg National Military Park. It's a sobering, history-rich day trip — a very different mood from the markets and amusement attractions elsewhere in the region.
What to do
- Museum & Visitor Center — orientation exhibits and the Cyclorama, a large cylindrical painting depicting Pickett's Charge.
- The battlefield — explore the grounds and monuments by car on a self-guided auto tour, or hire a Licensed Battlefield Guide for a more in-depth experience.
Visiting tips
Hours, fees (some elements are free, others ticketed), and the details of booking a licensed guide all vary (needs verification — confirm current hours, the Cyclorama/film ticketing, and guide availability before you go). Allow most of a day to do it justice; start at the Visitor Center to get oriented, then tour the field.
It's a leading option on the Day Trips page — see Four-Night Itinerary for placement.
