Four-Night Itinerary

A relaxed four-night plan based in Lancaster, blending the city, Amish country, the northern towns, and one day trip.
Updated 2026-06-22Sources General knowledge — specifics flagged for verification (no source documents ingested yet).
A serene train ride setup with a world map, mug, and hat on a table, suggesting travel plans.

This itinerary uses Lancaster City as a single base for all four nights, so you unpack once and take short drives each day. Driving times are approximate (needs verification); confirm venue hours and book buggy rides or train tickets ahead where possible.

Day 1 — Arrive + Lancaster City

Settle into your base in Lancaster City. Spend the afternoon walking downtown and the Lancaster Central Market (check market days — needs verification), then have dinner at one of the downtown restaurants or breweries. If it's a First Friday, browse Gallery Row in the evening.

Day 2 — Amish Country

Head east into Amish Country (about 15–20 minutes). Start at the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market for produce and baked goods, then continue to Intercourse and Kitchen Kettle Village. Take one of the Amish Buggy Rides for a back-road tour, and finish with a scenic Covered Bridges drive on the way back.

Day 3 — Strasburg + Lititz + Ephrata

Begin at the Strasburg Rail Road for a heritage train ride and the nearby railroad museum (check schedules — needs verification). In the afternoon, drive north to Lititz (see Lititz & Ephrata) for the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, chocolate, and a stroll through Lititz Springs Park. If time allows, add the Ephrata Cloister.

Day 4 — Day trip: Hershey or Gettysburg

Pick one full-day trip (see Day Trips): Hershey (~45 minutes) for chocolate and family fun, or Gettysburg (~1 hour) for Civil War history. Return to Lancaster for your final night.

Day 5 — Depart

Enjoy a last breakfast and check out. For heritage context throughout, see Pennsylvania Dutch Culture.
